Personally I feel that the word "perfume" does not fit too well in a man's world when using it to talk about men's fragrances. However, in actual fact men's perfumes are indeed a category of fragrances on their own so its as well to be comfortable with it.
Personally I feel that the word "perfume" does not fit too well in a man's world when using it to talk about men's fragrances. However, in actual fact men's perfumes are indeed a category of fragrances on their own so its as well to be comfortable with it. Eau de toilette is another name - French of course - used for cologne, although it does tend to be a little stronger than cologne with a more concentrated make-up. And usually stronger goes hand in hand with higher price tag. There are in actual fact nine different fragrances that are blended in some way to produce the very large amount of varieties we have in our shops today. These are musk, herbal, spice, citrus, floral, fruity, woody, powdery and leather. Not entirely what you would be thinking, I'm sure. Most of the high end men's fragrances are made up of three different layers. These layers in order are known as head or top notes, middle or heart notes and followed up by the base notes. When you first smell a fragrance you are smelling the top notes which will tend to be spicy or fresh. The top notes can remain for around 3 hours or so although this depends on the quality of the fragrance and on the wearer. The mid notes will be made up of citrus or spicy aromas and will not remain for long but give a pleasant undertone to the top note. The base notes can be made of various blends and tend to stay for longer, particularly in a higher quality fragrance. Under the band of woody fragrances you have cedar, sandalwood and patchouli and an example of this could be Envy by Gucci. Leather encompasses the likes of tobacco, woods, and honey and will often be used as the mid note or base note in a fragrance. An example of a fragrance with leather is Dana's English Leather, strangely enough. Woody fragrances include sandalwood, pathchouli and cedars and again will often be found in either mid or base notes. Envy by Gucci is a woody fragrance. Fragrances once out of the bottle and applied to the skin will take on a different aroma in short time. If you smell one fragrance on a gentleman and smell the same fragrance on someone else you will find that they actually smell a little differently. This is nothing to do with an aberration in the fragrance but rather it depends on the skin of the wearer, their surroundings and such things as stress levels to name but a few reasons why there is variance in aroma. The process of manufacturing men's fragrances is a highly complex procedure. Even if the ingredients of a certain aroma were to be made public (highly unlikely as they are a closely guarded secret) it would be next to impossible for the layman to produce the same fragrance. Thus the reason its a multi-billion dollar industry.
