On the banks of Egypt’s new Suez Canal

29 July 2015 Last updated at 21:49 BST

Egypt is about to inaugurate a new Suez Canal, which is expected to double the revenues of its strategic waterway over the next decade.

It has constructed a new lane which runs alongside part of the existing canal, allowing reduced transit and waiting times for ships.

It took one year to dig the new canal, with a cost of some $8.5bn (£5.4bn).

Egyptians funded the whole project.

The BBC’s Sally Nabil went to the city of Ismailiya where the canal is being tested.
