COMMENTARY They Finally Noticed the Neighborhood

For years, neighborhoods across America have been changing right in front of our eyes.

A home goes on the market. Before a local family has a chance to make an offer, it is purchased by an investment company located hundreds or even thousands of miles away.

One house becomes five. Five become 50. Before long, an entire neighborhood that was once filled with homeowners becomes part of an investment portfolio.

That is one of the reasons Georgia Senator Raphael Warnock pushed to stop large private equity firms from buying more single-family homes. His proposal is now federal law as part of the bipartisan 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act.

Will one new law fix America’s housing problems?

No.

It will not lower interest rates overnight. It will not make every home affordable. However, it definitely sends an important message.

Homes are not just investments. They are where families build wealth. They are where children grow up. They are where legacies begin.

That should matter here in Jackson.

Washington has finally recognized something many of us have known for years. When big companies compete with families for homes, it becomes harder for everyday people to build wealth through homeownership.

This new law will not decide Jackson’s future.

We will.
