Welcome to President Trump’s “Police Week.” At the National Peace Officer’s Memorial Service today the president chastised critics of police use of excessive force, saying that police have been subjected to “hostility and violence.”  Trump said he intends to protect police from that criticism.

“You are entitled to leadership at the highest level that will draw a bright line in the sand, not a red line in the sand that isn’t gone over, but a bright line in the sand, and we will protect you,” he said.

Trump advocated for police during his presidential campaign, calling the wave of criticism that accompanied the spate of killings around the country of unarmed black men a “war on police.”  He has previously defended officers against accusations of police misconduct in high-profile officer-involved shootings.

The president called respect for law enforcement a “personal priority.”
