British number three James Ward has been knocked out of the Claro Open after a hard-fought first-round loss.
The 28-year-old was beaten 6-4 6-7 (7-9) 7-5 by German Michael Berrer in just under two hours in Bogota, Colombia.
After losing the first set, Ward struck back with 10 aces in the second, which he won on a tie-break before narrowly missing out in the decider.
Ward, who reached the third round of Wimbledon this year, has helped Britain reach the
Davis Cup semi-finals.
Britain will host Australia in September after progressing to the last four for the first time in 34 years.
