Supporters of Cong. Corrine Brown are saying their goodbyes to the veteran lawmaker after nearly 20 years of service to the Central Florida community.
With the handwriting on the wall clearly established after losing her legal battle opposing the current redistricting lines, Congresswoman Corrine Brown has announced that she will run for re-election in the new 5th District in Jacksonville. Brown fought a good fight to keep her old congressional district which incorporated both Jacksonville and Orlando. The most recent judicial rejection on the threshold of a new election forced the veteran politician to choose between running in Jacksonville or running in Orlando.
“Although I am extremely disappointed in the Federal court’s decision earlier this week, I am declaring my candidacy for the newly drawn Congressional District Five of Florida,” Brown said in a prepared statement. “And with respect to the redistricting lawsuit, I will continue to explore my options regarding a possible appeal, and am still reviewing the ruling with lead Attorney William Sheppard and his legal team in Jacksonville.”
In deciding to run in Jacksonville, Brown cleared the way for a run for the Orlando seat by Val Demings, former Orlando Chief of Police, and wife of Orange County Sheriff, Jerry Demings.
“I have a lot of unfinished business to address in Washington, and I look forward to providing a strong voice in Congress for the citizens in the new 5th Congressional District,” Brown said.
