On Monday, a Metropolitan Detention Center inmate told her lawyer she was sexually assaulted by one of the jail’s transportation officers.

The attorney reported the information, and the center’s chief and captains began an internal investigation. Bernalillo County detectives were advised of a report of sexual assault and began their criminal investigation Thursday.

Detectives contacted the inmate, who is still in custody, and she said the incident happened in a courtroom elevator. She said she was cuffed and shackled while being escorted by an officer from a courtroom.

Her lawyer said Officer Enock Arviso held the elevator doors open with his leg to make sure nobody came up or down in the elevator before sexually assaulting her. The attorney added Arviso was armed with a gun.

Arviso was also interviewed by detectives, but his account of the day’s events didn’t include sexual intercourse with the inmate. He later amended his statement and admitted to having sex with her.
