The City of Orlando and Orlando City Foundation Team Up for Earth Day as part of the City’s Spring Into Sustainability Campaign and the MLS Works Greener Goals Initiative
WHAT:
Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer, District 5 City Commissioner Regina I. Hill and the Orlando City Foundation members will work-along with Rock Lake residents to create a new community garden as part of Earth Month.
Mayor Dyer and Commissioner Hill will “get their hands dirty” and help residents to build garden plots, fill them with soil and compost material and plant vegetables and herbs.
The event is part of the City’s Spring Into Sustainability campaign and the MLS Works Greener Goals initiative to engage more citizens to help conserve the environment for future generations to come.
The new Rock Lake community garden will feature a total of 19 plots for residents to use and grow food in once completed on Saturday. The new garden brings the number of community gardens to nine in the City and there are plans to add two more by the end of 2016. These community gardens not only help provide affordable and fresh produce for residents, but they also bring residents together by providing a place to gather and grow together.
Through initiatives like community gardens, the City is transforming the urban environment to connect neighborhoods with green public spaces for residents to gather while furthering Orlando’s goals to be the most sustainable City in the country.
