The madman supposed by many to be a serial killer loose on Chicago’s West Side may have struck again. 13-year-old Yasminda Mitchell has been added to the list of possible victims of the person (or persons) responsible for 4 other disappearances since March 16.
The 13-year-old was last seen on May 31, 2018 in the area of 100 W. 47th Street, which is on the city’s South Side, but according to local authorities, she was known to hang out on the West Side, near 6000-6300 S. Damen and 6300 S. Winchester. Yasmine brings the number of missing teens and women to five.
Anna Stanislawczyk was the first to go missing from Chicago’s West Side. The 18-year-old went missing on March 16 and has not been seen or heard from since. Anna went missing from the area near Central Park and Fillmore. She is 5-foot-7, 100-pounds, with red hair and brown eyes.
The next woman to go missing was 15-year-old Sadaria Davis. She was last seen leaving her home in the 4200 block of West Adams on April 25, according to an alert from Chicago police. Her body was found in a vacant apartment a little more than 2 weeks later, on May 11, six blocks away from her home. According to the Chicago Sun Times, autopsy results were inconclusive, and police have not determined how she died.
26-year-old Shantieya Smith was taken next, on May 25. She was last seen in front of her home near 16th and Central Park. While Stanislawczyk and Smith have similar body structure– Smith is a 5-foot-8 and 115 pound black woman with brown eyes and black hair with red ends– police have been reluctant to draw any conclusions about a serial killer being at work.
At the time Smith went missing, she left her cellphone and her 7-year-old daughter at home. Her mother, Latanya Moore, told reporters: “My daughter was last seen getting in a car with a man in front of my home. . . . I talked to the man that she left with, who threatened me and [has] since changed his phone number. I also gave detectives his name and last known addresses, and haven’t heard from them since.”
Smith’s lifeless body was found June 7, underneath a car in a garage in the North Lawndale area of Chicago. Channel WGN reported that the body was said by witnesses to badly decomposed but had Smith’s characteristic red hair. Dental records confirmed the body to be Shantieya Smith’s.
Before Smith was found, 15-year-old Victoria Garrett went missing on June 3. She was last seen leaving home. The 5-foot-4, 160-pound black girl, with black braided hair and brown eyes does not fit the profile established by the other victims, but her home is located in the 2.5 mile radius the killer seems to be focused on. She has not been seen or heard from since. All speculation is that she has fallen victim to the killer at work on the city’s West Side.
On June 12, Yasminda Mitchell was reported missing. She lives on the South Side of Chicago, and was last seen on May 31 on the city’s South Side. Even though she lives on the South Side, police say she was known to frequent a West Side neighborhood. That fact has fueled speculation that she may have been taken while on the West Side. The 13-year-old has been described by CBS local news as 5’5″ tall, 250 pounds.
