Ava Le’Ray Barrin is the 14th transgender American murdered since the start of 2017 and is also the youngest victim of anti-trans violence this year.

Georgia teen Ava Le’Ray Barrin was shot and killed Sunday morning in the parking lot of the Atlanta apartment complex where she lived.  She is the 14th transgender American murdered since the start of 2017 and is also the youngest victim of anti-trans violence this year.

Jalen Breon Brown, 21, has been charged with her murder and is claiming that he acted in self-defense.

Although the investigation into the incident has not yet been completed, Athens-Clarke County Police spokesperson Epifanio Rodriguez seemed to minimize the shooting, saying Monday afternoon that “it was just an argument that escalated.”  He then said “we don’t want to go into it any further because detectives are still speaking to witnesses.”

Officers responded to an 11:45 a.m. report of a fight in progress at Riverview Apartments at 1020 College Avenue and found Barrin lying in the parking lot of the complex with a single gunshot wound to the side of her chest.  She was later pronounced dead at a local hospital, according to police.

  1. The 14th murder this year? This one by another trans p.o.c. (from what I read on another site) ? I know the other murders were by p.o.c.s, but this is the first I heard the killer was trans too.
