In a deal announced this past Thursday, Hispanic media giant, Univision Communications, has purchased black news website, The Root, for an undisclosed sum.

Its a game-changing move.

The Spanish-language broadcaster deepens its move into the English-speaking marketplace with this foray into black media.  Isaac Lee, president of news and digital services for Univision intimated in a press release that with its expansion into other demographics, Univision is pushing “to define the fabric of the country, from buying power, to social influence, to elections.”

The Root has an average of 5 million monthly unique visitors per month, which makes it the leading black news site in the country.  It will keep its editorial voice, so visitors will likely keep coming back.  But the Univision relationship will give it access to much greater resources, which we assume will also include TV.
