    National Playground Clean-Up and Community Impact Day Kicks-Off a Local Sorority’s Environmental Ownership Campaign

    The Psi Theta Omega Chapter of AKA joined forces with the community volunteers to restore a playground in an in the Carver Shores Community

    AKAs pose with Nick Anderson web  ORLANDO,FL (May 21, 2015) A local chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. kicked off their organization’s new International Environmental Ownership Initiative with “AKA 1908 Playground Impact Day”, a playground restoration project at Poppy Park ( in a neighborhood on the west side of Orlando) on Saturday, May 16, 2015. This kick-off is the first in a series of restoration projects the local sorority has planned for their newly adopted park – in addition to raising support for a new community basketball court in the park.

    More than 60 volunteers, including staff from Orlando City SoccerKeep Orlando BeautifulAlpha Phi Alpha Fraternity and retired NBA Orlando Magic star, Nick Anderson joined the women of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. – Psi Theta Omega chapter for the park clean up. These volunteers removed litter, glass, drug paraphernalia, tires and any other hazardous items from the park and surrounding areas. The sorority members also enlisted volunteers to paint, fix and replace park benches and other playground equipment that was currently out of order.

    “Poppy Park is a place where so many young kids come to play,” said Lisa Riggins, a local chairman of the AKA Environmental Impact Initiative. “As an organization and members of this community, we wanted to do our part to help make this area a safer place for kids to grow and play.”

    In addition the park clean-up, volunteers walked around the neighborhood talking to community members and promoting environmental sustainability by encouraging recycling, litter prevention and waste management.

    The AKA 1908 Playground Project℠ is a national sorority initiative, launched to ensure children have safe and inviting places to play. Sorority members across the nation restored and renewed more than 1,908 existing community and school playgrounds on May 16, 2015.
