Orange County voters will not automatically receive printed sample ballots at home for the August 18 primary. Voters must instead review their ballot through the Supervisor of Elections website or obtain election information through voting locations and official election materials.

Early voting began August 3 and continues through August 16. The county’s election calendar also shows vote-by-mail processing and public ballot-observation activities underway.
The information issue arrives immediately after Tuesday night’s Orange County mayoral debate, where Chris Messina, Tiffany Moore Russell, Stephanie Murphy and Mayra Uribe discussed Amendment 3, county finances and affordable housing.

The absence of mailed sample ballots is more than an administrative detail.
Sample ballots allow voters to study crowded races, research unfamiliar candidates and arrive prepared. Removing that familiar paper communication places more responsibility on voters to find information themselves.
That burden will not be equal.
