The Florida Highway Patrol is searching for a driver accused of striking an 11-year-old boy riding an electric scooter and leaving the scene in Orange County.
The collision occurred Sunday afternoon, according to FHP. Investigators had not publicly identified the driver as of early Tuesday.
The child’s condition and the precise circumstances of the collision should be updated from FHP before publication. Authorities should also clarify whether the boy was riding in a roadway, bicycle lane, sidewalk or crossing area and whether investigators have obtained vehicle or surveillance evidence.
The case arrives as Orange County school leaders consider new rules for student use of electric bicycles and scooters. The School Board is scheduled to discuss the issue during a work session Tuesday.
Electric scooters and bicycles have become increasingly common for short trips, including travel to school. Their popularity has moved faster than many road systems, school rules and safety programs.
A meaningful response requires more than telling children to be careful. Drivers have a legal and moral obligation to remain at a crash scene. Local governments also have a responsibility to examine whether streets, crossings and bicycle facilities safely accommodate younger riders.
The School Board’s proposed restrictions may reduce risks on campus, but they cannot resolve dangers students encounter on public roads. Any final policy should be accompanied by helmet education, safe-riding instruction and coordination with transportation officials responsible for school routes.
