National Urban League President and CEO Marc H. Morial blasted Sen. Tommy Tuberville’s recent racist rant as “stunning,” and called on members of the Senate to condemn his statements. The tirade took place at last Saturday’s Donald Trump rally in Nevada, where white extremists congregated and speakers took time out to use old arguments to bash black people– again. Alabama Senator Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) used the occasion to sound an all too-familiar refrain– on the subject of “reparations.”

He told the crowd that Democrats are in favor of “reparations” because they are “pro-crime.”

Tuberville’s also called for an end to food stamps, education reform, and closing the border.

MSNBC’s Morning Joe host Joe Scarborough likened the Alabama senator’s comments to the rhetoric of hard core segregationists like George Wallace and Lester Maddox.

“Even in this era of heightened racial rhetoric, Sen. Tuberville’s bigoted comments were stunning,” Morial said. “Every member of the Senate must make it clear that Tuberville’s repugnant views are unacceptable and must bear no influence on public policy.

“People of conscience can disagree on the best way to achieve economic justice after centuries of slavery, segregation, and discrimination,” Morial said. “Sen. Tuberville has disqualified himself from serious discourse by smearing in the ugliest possible terms those who pursue racial justice and those to whom justice is owed.”

In a press statement, NAACP President Derrick Johnson called Tuberville’s comments “flat out racist, ignorant and utterly sickening.”

“His words promote a centuries-old lie about Black people that throughout history has resulted in the most dangerous policies and violent attacks on our community,” Johnson added.
